This 2-day workshop focusses on alla prima technique in oil painting with a focus on color and palette. More specifically, this workshop will cover palette organization, control of color mixing in tonal painting, alla prima painting technique, use of mediums, composition, and learning to see in painterly abstract terms. Each day will consist of a 1-2 hour lecture and demonstration, followed by painting time with one-on-one instruction.

This is a monitored, non-instructional workshop in which artists can work at their own pace in the medium of their selection (no turpentine-based oil paints, please) from a live model in short and sustained poses. Chairs and a limited number of easels are available. Students must provide their own materials. Come as often as you like throughout the year. Here’s an opportunity to expand your dyeing and surface design expertise by exploring the use of soy wax and traditional wax methods to draw, paint, and create patterns, resulting in visually complex designs and paintings. Abstract, representational and decorative designs can be easily and beautifully created using brush waxing, carving, writing, use of Tjantings and stamps. Multiple layers will be waxed and dyed using cold dye techniques to create unique, innovative work. You will take home samples of each technique, as well as, a scarf and a painting
Students will use the “flat resist technique” to create a fitted hat. Various techniques for surface design will be discussed, as well as shaping the finished piece. Materials used include dyed carded merino wool, silk chiffon fabric and other silk fibers. No previous felting experience is necessary but expect a bit of physical work while making felt. Please bring an old towel and a bar of soap to class. Materials fee: $15 (payable to instructor)
