Indigo & Batik:Watershed

- $105

Discover the possibilities of indigo dying … an expressive and ancient art form in this fun 1-day ACP workshop. This summer, weather permitting, participants will get out the pails and the hose and learn all about indigo dyeing. Explore this mysterious dye-stuff and other natural dyes. Participants will be guided on a brief hike by a Naturalist during which time they can harvest materials (leaves, sticks, etc.) that can then be incorporated into the batik and shibori processes using indigo. Experiment with techniques of binding and winding with natural resists to create amazing patterned, bright blue and white fabrics! Soy wax batik will also be taught in conjunction with Indigo, giving students a range of skills to create traditional, ethnic batiks, as well as modern, edgy designs. Everything is provided including samples, handouts, 2 silk scarves and a cotton Tee that students will dye and take home. Participants are invited to bring in personal undyed fabrics to play with, as well. A material fee of $35 is payable to the instructor. Bring a lunch.

Fun With Frogs: Watershed

- $30

Join local artist and ACP instructor Libby Ramage in a one-day workshop inspired by some of the Watershed’s many “residents”. Hop on over for fun and adventure. Students will begin the session by sponge painting socks and, while those dry, they will make a plaster-wrap lily pad for their frog. Then they will fill the socks with a bird seed, seal and decorate with legs and buttons. The crowning embellishment will be the painted lily pad – suitable for any prince.

This workshop is part of ACP’s Saturday Sampler for kids at the Watershed (Water, Webs & Wings!). Register for one, two, three, or all four (for the most fun!). Art classes meet in the Watershed Center of Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association. The Watershed Center is the new LEED platinum environmental center of the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association. Located on the Watershed Reserve in Hopewell Township, the center showcases sustainable energy features such as a green roof, geothermal heating and cooling and an innovative wastewater wetland.
