Indigo Dye & Batik: Morven

- $130

Students will have exploring the ancient art experience of indigo dyeing in the great outdoors with Master Artisan Lian Sawires. This spring, weather permitting, participants will get out pails and hoses and do indigo dyeing outside on the beautiful grounds surrounding the Carriage House of Morven Museum & Garden. Learn about this mysterious dye-stuff and other natural dyes, do some binding and winding with natural resists to create amazing patterned, bright blue and white fabrics! Soy wax batik and natural turmeric dyeing will also be taught, in conjunction with indigo dyeing, giving participants a range of skills to create traditional, ethnic batiks, as well as modern, edgy designs. Everything is provided including samples, handouts, two silk scarves and a cotton t-shirt to bring home.
Bring a lunch and your own undyed fabrics to play with as well.
Material fee $35.00 is payable to the instructor.

Characters: Draw/Write W/S - Day 2

Characters will spring to life in this exciting new workshop combining a mixture of creative thinking, writing and drawing exercises to bring out students’ inner storyteller. Jump inside the minds of favorite characters by learning their histories, motivations, and even what they had for breakfast! Explore how a character’s body language, expression, and color palette can tell a compelling visual narrative. Class will cover basic drawing skills and character design techniques, so that each student leaves with a completed illustration.

Textured Teapot

- $140

Learn how to make a teapot in one day. No previous clay experience is required and it is so much fun! Students in this new workshop will create their own funky, and functional, teapot! They will discover special techniques for texturing, forming, and assembling soft slab teapots. Teapots will be glazed and ready for pick up approximately two weeks following the workshop.

Electric Diamond: Orchestral Memes

When a classically-based foundation of musicianship meets 21st century technology, the sonic possibilities are endless and endlessly fascinating. Stuart Diamond and Don Slepian are Electric Diamond, an ensemble that defies categorization. With visual artist, Brian Van Korn joining them to create real-time video montages, it’s an adventurous journey both eyes and ears. Also during the program, guest artist, Kip Rosser will be on hand to add the ethereal voice of his theremin.

Dirk Quinn Band: Summer Courtyard Concert

- Free and Open to the Public!

As part of the 31st annual Summer Courtyard Concert Series, the Arts Council of Princeton and Princeton Shopping Center present the Dirk Quinn Band. Dirk Quinn Band is a high energy funk/jazz band with great melodic sensibilities, rhythmic experimentation and an accessible modern edge. Featuring an infectious energy and musical interplay, they routinely attract listeners that are admittedly more accustomed to lyric-based music. Utilizing over a decade of steady performing throughout the US and Canada, the Dirk Quinn Quartet has developed a unique and progressive style – one that appeals to a wide variety of music listeners with fans ranging from the jam band hippies to the jazz snobs.

Don’t forget to bring a lawn chair! In the event of inclement weather, concerts will be held inside the Arts Council’s Kristina Johnson Pop-Up Studio at the Princeton Shopping Center.
