9:30 am – 12:30 pm
Drawing | Ages 5-9
Anyone can draw accurately, if taught the basics! Students in this workshop will improve fundamental skills, explore additional techniques, and discover new ways of looking at objects and drawing what they see. Nature, people, buildings, and animals (stuffed, of course) will be included as subject matter inspiring students to draw using basic shapes to express themselves creatively. We will also use our imaginations to draw fantasy images and cartoons. Students will take home finished landscapes, self-portraits and illustrated books … keepsakes for your family.
Impressionism | Ages 10-12
Students will discover the fascinating art world of impressionist painters, a ground-breaking movement in the late19th century. They will study such masters as Monet, van Gogh, Renoir, and Degas among others, observing the many interesting and distinctive characteristics and techniques: brush strokes, textures, use of color, emphasis on effects of light, subject matter, and more. Students will explore tonal shading using pencils, charcoal and watercolors, combining these mediums to discover how each artist worked. They will learn “how to paint impressionism” and create their own painting on canvas inspired by Monet’s water lily series.
1:00 – 4:00 pm
Painting | Ages 5-9
Painting is the art form with which we are most familiar whether at home, or visiting museums, or reading illustrated books. Students will look at examples of how paintings have changed throughout the ages. They will learn how to look at and enjoy many distinctive styles. After that introduction, they will try their own hands at painting like the masters: Monet, van Gogh, and Beatrix Potter among others. We will experiment with different kinds of paint. We will learn the fundamentals of color mixing and the proper handling of the medium … all while having fun discovering paint’s special effects. Students will create finished artwork (perhaps still a bit wet) to share with their families.
Pop Art | Ages 10-12
Pop Art is an art movement that emerged in the 1950’s in Britain and the United States. It included imagery from popular culture. Students will discuss works by such masters as Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring and use that as inspiration for several creative projects including relief sculpture, industrial design (the iconic Campbell’s soup can), and painting.
