Virtual Story & Verse: A Storytelling & Poetic Open Mic

- Free and open to everyone!

Held in collaboration with the African American Cultural Collaborative of Mercer County and the Central Jersey Story Slam, the Arts Council presents a special evening of community-created entertainment in the form of storytelling and poetic open mic!

Each month, we’ll be inviting inspiration from a well-known song title. All are welcome to tell a well-prepared story or perform their poetry, interpreting the theme as broadly as they wish. Performers should present their own work, inspired by May’s theme: “Lean on Me”. The evening will include 45 minutes of poetry followed by 45 minutes of storytelling.

— We will be virtually connecting via Zoom. Click here to register and join us on Friday:
You will receive an email confirmation with instructions to join.

— When you join (by clicking the link above), there will be an opportunity to put your name in the ‘hat’ from 7:15 to 7:30pm. The event will begin at 7:30.

— If you plan to perform, please test your microphone and camera ahead of time to be sure that they are working! If you’re new to Zoom, click on the above link (under ‘TO JOIN’) ahead of the meeting so you can download the software you’ll need to join the event.

— Storytellers should prepare a 5-minute story on the theme, true and about the teller. Storytellers should follow “The Moth” guidelines:

— Poets should perform their own poetry, up to 5 minutes in length, related to the theme.

PLEASE NOTE: performers will be selected at random, so it’s possible that not everyone will get to perform.

Story & Verse would typically be included in the Arts Council’s $5 Friday series held in our Paul Robeson Center for the Arts. Funds raised through these events benefit the ACP’s outreach programs that serve our community’s seniors and underserved youth.
