DESCRIPTION:Ghada Amer: A New World\nOn View: October 10 – November 7\, 2026Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 10\, 3-5pmArtist talk + seated dinner: Friday\, October 9\, 6-9pm (tickets + details here)\nAbout Ghada Amer:Ghada Amer was born in Cairo (Egypt) in 1963. In 1974\, her parents relocated to France where she began her artistic training ten years later at Villa Arson\, Nice\, France. She currently lives and works between New York and Paris and has exhibited among others at the Venice Biennale\, the Sydney Biennale\, the Whitney Biennale\, and the Brooklyn Museum. \n“I believe that all women should like their bodies and use them as tools of seduction\,” Amer stated; and in her well-known erotic embroideries\, she at once rejects oppressive laws set in place to govern women’s attitudes toward their bodies and repudiates first-wave feminist theory that the body must be denied to prevent victimization. By depicting explicit sexual acts with the delicacy of needle and thread\, their significance assumes a tenderness that simple objectification ignores. \nGhada Amer continuously allows herself to explore the dichotomies of an uneasy world and confronts the language of hostility and finality with unsettled narratives of longing and love. \nGhada Amer’s work addresses first and foremost the ambiguous\, transitory nature of the paradox that arises when searching for concrete definitions of east and west\, feminine and masculine\, art and craft. DESCRIPTION:Plant Planet: Two Views of Nature Printing\nby Laura Bethmann and Lisa Madson\n\nOn View: October 10 – November 7\, 2026\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, October 10\, 3-5pm\nLaura Bettman in the Siegal Gallery & Lisa Madson in the Lower Level Gallery\n\n\nArtist statement: \nNature Printing: Natural objects\, printed by hand\, are direct impressions of life.\nThe forms\, patterns and textures of leaves\, flowers\, roots\, fruits\, tree bark\, seeds\, vegetables\, and a host of natural objects produce phenomenally expressive\, life-sized artwork. The spontaneity\, immediacy\, and organic qualities of even the simplest nature print depict true visual characteristics of the natural world. \nAn Ancient Practice\nLeonardo da Vinci described this process on folio 72 verso of his ‘Codice Atlantico’ including a nature printed sage leaf. Benjamin Franklin devised a secret nature printing process when printing colonial currency in Philadelphia. Nature printing is a little-known technique today\, but it holds a fascinating and worldwide history. This practice served as art and craft\, and as a science for the study and identification of plants. Although it has been traced back thousands of years\, its origins have never been discovered. \nTwo Views: Lisa Madson and Laura Bethmann\nLisa lives and works in northern New Jersey. Laura lives and works in southern New Jersey. The highlands and mountainous regions versus the Pine Barrens and flat\, rich farmlands. Both of these regions are catalysts for creative innovation\, as these artists make vivid associations with their surroundings and explore a kinship with the natural world. \nTwo Views: Nature Printing\nLisa presents artworks that portray a moment in time with insight into our connections to the environment. She translates the beauty of nature through a steam dyeing process where the natural pigments and patterns of plants project their images onto paper or canvas. Lisa invites nature’s outdoor elements to play a role in determining the final result\, such as floating a printed canvas on the river for pattern\, or aging it through the winter in ice and snow. Other media include inks\, embroidery\, cyanotype\, silkscreen and encaustic.\nLaura is influenced by the fantastic structures\, delicacy\, and mystery of botanical life. She has continued to be excited by adventures in the experimental process of nature printing for over 40 years. Her process is direct printing. Botanicals\, carefully inked or painted\, are printed by hand onto papers\, fabrics\, and a variety of other surfaces. Her nature printing media include relief ink\, watercolor\, and acrylic. Laura’s botanically-inspired watercolor paintings include ink nature printing\, color pencil and collage.

SUMMARY:Jersey Art Meetup (JAM)
DESCRIPTION:Princeton Comic Makers presents: JERSEY ART MEETUPS (JAM)\, a weekly social event connecting creatives within the greater Central Jersey area through a shared passion for sequential art and new media.  Attendees may use this open workshop space to draw\, write\, and develop their own artwork\, with an opportunity to receive peer review and feedback from other members if desired. Illustrators\, animators\, writers\, and generalists are all welcome to join and discuss their art and career goals\, share learning resources\, promote current projects\, or find friends and collaborators. Together\, we aspire to cultivate a local community that keeps artists motivated towards achieving their dreams! \n\nOpen to ages 16+ of any skill level interested in any form of narrative art and design (i.e. Animation\, Concept Art\, Comics\, Game Design\, Picture Books\, etc.)\nGroup meets weekly on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Casual attendance is accepted!\nBringing own materials is highly encouraged. Some basic materials are provided – paper\, pencils\, etc. – but please bring any tools necessary to help you create (i.e. drawing tablets\, sketchbooks\, etc.)\n\nWho we are: Sponsored by artist and educator Ronah Harris\, Princeton Comic Makers is an artist collective founded in 2023 by local illustrators Christina Castro\, Suyang Gong\, and Masha Zhdanova after noticing a lack of in-person community spaces for NJ-based artists specializing in narrative arts and communications design. Although we create independently\, we often exhibit together at events such as MoCCA Fest\, Anime NYC\, and Camden Comic Con. Our weekly study group motivated us to strive towards completing projects and working towards professional goals\, so we hope more people can benefit from this club! \nChristina Castro is a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist who graduated from Pratt Institute (2018) with a BFA in Digital Arts (2D Animation) and a minor in Creative Writing. Past clients include Smashbits Animation\, gal-dem zine\, and Bad Robot. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.
