It must be discovered\, dug\, used in its raw state – or sometimes\, refined – and then tested. Unlike commercially processed clay\, wild clay enables the maker to tap into the unique characteristics of a specific place — its colors\, textures\, and material properties — revealing the distinct identity of the local landscape. \nClay is intrinsically linked to anthropology: we understand much about societies of the past through their use of clay. Local “wild” clay offers discovery of local history\, ecology\, geology\, science\, and a contemporary view of art. In most cases local wild clay is infused with such color and character incomparable to commercial clay. \nWorking with wild clay fosters a deeper connection to the long lineage of makers who\, for thousands of years\, shaped and reshaped their worlds through this material. It offers a way to step outside the relentless cycle of consumerism and mass production\, reminding us that art and ecology are intertwined and fostering awareness of our materials\, where they come from\, and our impact on the land. \nAbout the curators:\nJohn ReinkingJohn Reinking is a New Jersey based ceramic artist whose work focuses on harvesting local materials to create functional and sculptural ceramic work. Reinking embraces clay in its rawest sense — from locally dug earth to refined stoneware — and fires in his woodkiln. His pieces bear the mark of fire\, ash\, and flame\, transforming simple forms into vessels of permanence and ritual. DESCRIPTION:The Traveling Waffle House Interviews\nBy artist Sheryl Bassman\nOn view: Mar 21 – Apr 18\nOpening: Sat\, Mar 21 | 3-5pm \n\nExhibition Statement:\nI have had an obsession with the Waffle House and its ageless presence for as long as I can\nremember. I spent the majority of my life waitressing and traveling around the country and have\nhad the greatest experiences meeting people from all different walks of life. I’ve learned that one\nwears many hats as a waitress working with the public. You are a therapist listening to\nstrangers’ problems; a salesperson selling items on the menu; a mediator between the customer\nand cooks when the food comes out wrong; a housekeeper keeping the restaurant clean and\nsanitized; a cashier responsible for bills and payments. All of this must be done with a smile on\nyour face. Despite all this\, serving is commonly looked down upon as a mediocre job and not a\ncareer – something one does when they cannot find any other work.\nThrough words and portraits\, I give recognition to each waitress/waiter. Each portrait is\nillustrated in ballpoint pen that waitress/ers use\, and completed on bold yet simple black and\nyellow Waffle House colors and is accompanied by a short story of what they shared about\nthemselves to me.

DESCRIPTION:The Ephemeral Waltz of the Butterfly\nBy Gina Lucia\nOn view: Mar 21 – Apr 18\nOpening: Sat\, Mar 21 | 3-5pm\n\nExhibition statement:\nOur bodies by construction imitate objects in nature that keep us alive. However\, we are as ephemeral as the leaves on a tree and as we evolve\, change form and respond to environmental changes\, we shed our leaves\, our skin and transform\, wither and die. The very essence of our existence is as ephemeral as our world\, our planet and all of the living things in the eco-system. Human kind is a part of the earth as are all of the creatures\, insects\, birds\, plants and other organic matter. Though we believe that we matter more than all of other living matter\, human kind is nothing more than organic matter. Organic matter resembling all other life forms: the roots of trees resemble our lungs\, like waterways and estuaries flow for plant life and other life to thrive. Small ventricles of life that expand and contract bring air\, food and water to our bodies and nourish our organs. As larvae transform into caterpillars and caterpillars into butterflies and the seasons transform into one another there is a rebirth of matter and a transformation that imitates nature and nature imitates man\, all fragile\, beautiful and ephemeral; such is the ephemeral waltz of the butterfly \nAbout the artist:\nLucia’s mixed media collage work fuses commercial and fine art techniques. Hand drawn sketches are combined with found objects\, photography\, hand-rendered typography and presented in a thought-provoking photomontage. Inspired by music\, Surrealism and the Freudian concept of free association\, personal experiences and heartbreak\, everyday encounters with objects people and places\, the current social and political climate\, her collages are spontaneous juxtapositions of unlikely things. She incorporates elements of pop culture; viscera; nature; animals; insects; and other eclectic ephemera into her work. The harmonious commingling of both digital technology and fine art techniques has allowed her to redefine and refine her art.\nWebsite

SUMMARY:Princeton Kiosk Design Competition Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Honoring the 7 designs in the competition to reimagine the municipality’s kiosks. \nAmerican Institue of Architects (AIA)\, New Jersey presented the winners of the Princeton Kiosk Design Competition to the Mayor and Council\, capping a months-long effort to reimagine the bulletin board structures that have anchored Nassau Street since 1988. \nThe competition grew out of last year’s Nassau Street Streetscape Project\, which raised the possibility of removing the kiosks altogether. Princeton architect Joshua Zinder\, a former AIA New Jersey president\, reached out to Councilman David Cohen and municipal engineer Deanna Stockton to propose a design competition as an alternative. \nThe competition opened May 30 and closed July 18. The top six entries were then displayed at the Princeton Public Library\, where residents voted for a People’s Choice Award. \nAll entries will be on display here on March 24\, 25 and 26 in our theater space. SUMMARY:Jersey Art Meetup (JAM)
DESCRIPTION:Princeton Comic Makers presents: JERSEY ART MEETUPS (JAM)\, a weekly social event connecting creatives within the greater Central Jersey area through a shared passion for sequential art and new media.  Attendees may use this open workshop space to draw\, write\, and develop their own artwork\, with an opportunity to receive peer review and feedback from other members if desired. Illustrators\, animators\, writers\, and generalists are all welcome to join and discuss their art and career goals\, share learning resources\, promote current projects\, or find friends and collaborators. Together\, we aspire to cultivate a local community that keeps artists motivated towards achieving their dreams! \n\nOpen to ages 16+ of any skill level interested in any form of narrative art and design (i.e. Animation\, Concept Art\, Comics\, Game Design\, Picture Books\, etc.)\nGroup meets weekly on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Casual attendance is accepted!\nBringing own materials is highly encouraged. Some basic materials are provided – paper\, pencils\, etc. – but please bring any tools necessary to help you create (i.e. drawing tablets\, sketchbooks\, etc.)\n\nWho we are: Sponsored by artist and educator Ronah Harris\, Princeton Comic Makers is an artist collective founded in 2023 by local illustrators Christina Castro\, Suyang Gong\, and Masha Zhdanova after noticing a lack of in-person community spaces for NJ-based artists specializing in narrative arts and communications design. Although we create independently\, we often exhibit together at events such as MoCCA Fest\, Anime NYC\, and Camden Comic Con. Our weekly study group motivated us to strive towards completing projects and working towards professional goals\, so we hope more people can benefit from this club! \nChristina Castro is a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist who graduated from Pratt Institute (2018) with a BFA in Digital Arts (2D Animation) and a minor in Creative Writing. Past clients include Smashbits Animation\, gal-dem zine\, and Bad Robot. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.
