SUMMARY:Echoes in Our Bones: The Empowering Legacy of Black Women Artists in American Art and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Echoes in Our Bones The Empowering Legacy of Black Women Artists in American Art and Culture \nCurated by Judith K. Brodsky and Rhinold L. Ponder\nOn View: Saturday\, August 29 – Saturday\, October 3\, 2026Opening reception: wednesday\, September 9 from 5-7pm \npanel discussion: thursday\, September 17 from 5:30-6:30pm at princeton university art museum. learn more.\n \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION:Echoes in Our Bones will explore how themes of identity\, history\, and cultural resilience have endured and transformed across generations. The exhibition examines how these artists have explored and expanded the ideals articulated in the Declaration of Independence\, “Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness”\, using art as a powerful vehicle for expression\, resistance\, care\, and community. Pairings of artists from past and present generations will include Faith Ringgold and Bisa Butler\, Selma Burke and Alison Saar\, Mary Lovelace O’Neal and Julie Mehretu\, Betye Saar and Tschabalala Self\, Carrie Mae Weems and LaToya Ruby Frazier\, Laura Wheeler Waring and Jordan Casteel\, Elizabeth Catlett and Kara Walker\, and Howardena Pindell and Shinique Smith. Through these connections\, the exhibition will not only showcase individual artistic voices but also trace a lineage of creative expression that has contributed to shaping and defining American art. \n\n The Pairings: \nFaith Ringgold and Bisa Butler create large-scale works celebrating African American life through a combination of fabric and paint—a medium pioneered by Ringgold and Miriam Schapiro during the early years of the Feminist Art Movement in the 1970s. Bisa Butler: Courtesy of the Artist and Jeffrey Deitch\, New York and Los Angeles. \n \n\nElizabeth Catlett and Kara Walker both explore the heritage of slavery through printmaking\, a medium traditionally associated with social justice and political commentary: \n \n\nLaura Wheeler Waring and Jordan Casteel: Waring devoted much of her career to portraying the emerging African American middle class\, while Casteel depicts the everyday lives of a broad spectrum of African Americans\, confidently occupying a wide variety of roles in the 21st century. It is worth noting that this early painting\, created shortly after Waring graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and likely executed while she was still in Paris on the prestigious travel fellowship awarded by PAFA to an outstanding graduate\, depicts two white women. This suggests that Waring had not yet chosen to focus her artistic practice on Black subjects: \n \n\nBetye Saar and Tschabalala Self\, artists from two different generations\, both use collage\, distortion\, and caricature to explore themes of social justice and the African American experience of injustice: \n \n\nHowardena Pindell and Shinique Smith both use discarded\, nontraditional materials to create works of art\, drawing an analogy to the experiences of people who are often overlooked or cast aside\, yet possess immense value: \n \n\nStop by to see the above pairings and more on view starting August 29. \n\nAbout the curators:\nJudith K. BrodskyActivist\, artist\, curator\, writer Judith K. Brodsky is Distinguished Professor Emerita\, Department of Art and Design\, Rutgers University. SUMMARY:Rooted in Bloom
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in Bloomby Prajakta Joshi\nOn View: August 29 – October 3\, 2026Opening Reception: Wednesday\, September 9\, 5-7pmGarden Club Collaboration on view starting Friday\, September 25\nArtist statement: \nBorn in Mumbai\, raised in Dubai\, and with years in the fast-paced design worlds of India and New York\, New Jersey\, Prajakta Joshi’s life has been an ongoing study in perspective. While her career led her to build her own design agency\, her creative soul remains anchored in something gentler and far more enduring: the elemental wisdom of the natural world. \nAs a practitioner of Yoga and Ayurveda\, Prajakta sees life not as a series of fixed moments\, but as a quiet\, rhythmic dance between Earth\, Fire\, Water\, Air\, and Space. These elemental forces do not simply surround us; they flow through our minds and bodies\, shaping how we experience growth and change. \nIn Rooted in Bloom\, Prajakta turns her lens toward this subtle energy. Her paintings move beyond traditional depictions of flowers and landscapes\, seeking instead to translate the invisible pulse of living things. Her work honors the forces of nature that guide us through transformation\, using bold color and gestural forms to translate the emotional and physical impact of movement onto the canvas. Through the softer gradients\, gestural forms\, she captures the delicate impermanence of nature—the swift rush of air\, the subtle shift of light\, and the fleeting beauty of a moment caught just before it becomes a memory. Her work reminds us that to truly bloom\, we must first allow ourselves to be moved by the quiet forces that sustain us. \n \n artist website\n \n \n artist instagram

SUMMARY:Ghada Amer: A New World
DESCRIPTION:Ghada Amer: A New World\nOn View: October 10 – November 7\, 2026Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 10\, 3-5pmArtist talk + seated dinner: Friday\, October 9\, 6-9pm (tickets + details here)\nAbout Ghada Amer:Ghada Amer was born in Cairo (Egypt) in 1963. In 1974\, her parents relocated to France where she began her artistic training ten years later at Villa Arson\, Nice\, France. She currently lives and works between New York and Paris and has exhibited among others at the Venice Biennale\, the Sydney Biennale\, the Whitney Biennale\, and the Brooklyn Museum. \n“I believe that all women should like their bodies and use them as tools of seduction\,” Amer stated; and in her well-known erotic embroideries\, she at once rejects oppressive laws set in place to govern women’s attitudes toward their bodies and repudiates first-wave feminist theory that the body must be denied to prevent victimization. By depicting explicit sexual acts with the delicacy of needle and thread\, their significance assumes a tenderness that simple objectification ignores. \nGhada Amer continuously allows herself to explore the dichotomies of an uneasy world and confronts the language of hostility and finality with unsettled narratives of longing and love. \nGhada Amer’s work addresses first and foremost the ambiguous\, transitory nature of the paradox that arises when searching for concrete definitions of east and west\, feminine and masculine\, art and craft. Through her paintings\, sculptures and public garden projects\, Amer takes traditional notions of cultural identity\, abstraction\, and religious fundamentalism and turns them on their heads. \nExhibiting Statement coming soon. \n \n Artist Website

SUMMARY:Plant Planet: Two Views of Nature Printing
DESCRIPTION:Plant Planet: Two Views of Nature Printing\nby Laura Bethmann and Lisa Madson\n\nOn View: October 10 – November 7\, 2026\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, October 10\, 3-5pm\nLaura Bettman in the Siegal Gallery & Lisa Madson in the Lower Level Gallery\n\n\nArtist statement: \nNature Printing: Natural objects\, printed by hand\, are direct impressions of life.\nThe forms\, patterns and textures of leaves\, flowers\, roots\, fruits\, tree bark\, seeds\, vegetables\, and a host of natural objects produce phenomenally expressive\, life-sized artwork. The spontaneity\, immediacy\, and organic qualities of even the simplest nature print depict true visual characteristics of the natural world. \nAn Ancient Practice\nLeonardo da Vinci described this process on folio 72 verso of his ‘Codice Atlantico’ including a nature printed sage leaf. Benjamin Franklin devised a secret nature printing process when printing colonial currency in Philadelphia. Nature printing is a little-known technique today\, but it holds a fascinating and worldwide history. This practice served as art and craft\, and as a science for the study and identification of plants. Although it has been traced back thousands of years\, its origins have never been discovered. \nTwo Views: Lisa Madson and Laura Bethmann\nLisa lives and works in northern New Jersey. Laura lives and works in southern New Jersey. The highlands and mountainous regions versus the Pine Barrens and flat\, rich farmlands. Both of these regions are catalysts for creative innovation\, as these artists make vivid associations with their surroundings and explore a kinship with the natural world. \nTwo Views: Nature Printing\nLisa presents artworks that portray a moment in time with insight into our connections to the environment. She translates the beauty of nature through a steam dyeing process where the natural pigments and patterns of plants project their images onto paper or canvas. Lisa invites nature’s outdoor elements to play a role in determining the final result\, such as floating a printed canvas on the river for pattern\, or aging it through the winter in ice and snow. Other media include inks\, embroidery\, cyanotype\, silkscreen and encaustic.\nLaura is influenced by the fantastic structures\, delicacy\, and mystery of botanical life. She has continued to be excited by adventures in the experimental process of nature printing for over 40 years. Her process is direct printing. Botanicals\, carefully inked or painted\, are printed by hand onto papers\, fabrics\, and a variety of other surfaces. Her nature printing media include relief ink\, watercolor\, and acrylic. Laura’s botanically-inspired watercolor paintings include ink nature printing\, color pencil and collage.

SUMMARY:Gallery opening - Ghada Amer: A New World
DESCRIPTION:Ghada Amer: A New World\nOn View: October 10 – November 7\, 2026Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 10\, 3-5pmArtist talk + seated dinner: Friday\, October 9\, 6-9pm (tickets + details here)\nAbout Ghada Amer:Ghada Amer was born in Cairo (Egypt) in 1963.

SUMMARY:Gallery opening - Plant Planet: Two Views of Nature Printing
SUMMARY:Pop-Up Choir Princeton
DESCRIPTION:The choir you didn’t know you needed.\nPop-Up Choir Princeton is an all-ages community singing experience where families\, neighbors\, and music-lovers come together to sing pop songs in harmony — no auditions\, no pressure\, just joy. \n\nKids and parents sing side-by-side\nAdults who “used to sing” feel safe to try again\nFirst-time singers get to experience the magic of choir\n\nSing shortened versions of well-loved pop songs arranged with easy-to-follow harmonies. \nRather than being divided by age or gender\, singers choose the range that feels best for their voice: Low\, Middle\, or High. \nFamilies sit together and work as a team — either choosing to all sing the same part or challenge each other to sing in harmony. \nThere will also be moments where singers can volunteer to sing a short line of the melody on their own. If you feel inspired\, just raise your hand when prompted and you can try the melody while the choir supports you. \nTheme – “Halloween Party Medley”• “Superstition” by Stevie Wonderful• “Ghostbusters” from Ghostbusters• “Thriller” by Michael Jackson \nA screen-free singing experience:\nPop-Up Choir Princeton is intentionally phone-free and screen-free. Instead of staring at iPads or projectors\, everyone receives a simple lyric sheet and learns the music together by ear and by voice — the way humans have always sung. This keeps the focus on listening\, connection\, and the shared energy of singing in the same room. \n \n Free rsvp

SUMMARY:Story & Verse: A Storytelling and Poetic Open Mic

This month’s theme is “From Dusk Till Dawn“\nArrive by 6:45pm to add your name to the hat. No previous experience or pre-registration necessary.\n\nJoin our audience: \n\nTake the elevator or stairs to the Solley Theater\, located on the top floor of our Paul Robeson Center for the Arts.\nOptional: participate from your seat with a Micro Story. Read the printed prompt based on the evening’s theme and respond with a super concise story (just a line or two!) that answers the question. Brass Rabbit will read your story at the mic\, as time allows.\nFind a seat and enjoy the performances. We kick off shortly after 7pm.\n\nQuestions? Shoot us an email. \n \nAbout our host:  \nBrass Rabbit is an artist\, contemporary curator\, and arts administrator based in Trenton\, New Jersey. Rabbit has been creating and hosting poetry\, spoken word\, and storytelling events in the tri-state area for over a decade. As a performer\, the art of storytelling holds a very special place in her heart\, but listening to and supporting others is where she feels most at home. \nHosting the Story & Verse Open Mic at the Arts Council of Princeton could be called a dream job\, but for Rabbit\, the position completely lacks any “work-like” qualities and is more of an outstanding experience she looks forward to each month. Previously\, Rabbit has hosted the Levitt Amp Music Series\, Voice to Ear Festival\, Word on Front Poetry Festival\, independent poetry and storytelling open mics\, and even curated an art exhibition celebrating the art of poetry.

SUMMARY:Stylebook Clothing Swap 2026
DESCRIPTION:Stylebook and the Arts Council of Princeton see a new outfit in your future. Bring garments that no longer serve you\, and the fashion fates will guide you to new-to-you pieces destined to be yours. \nWe all have a piece of nice clothing that just didn’t work out for whatever reason. It might not fit your size\, your life\, or maybe your style has just evolved. Whatever the reason\, special clothes don’t have to be stuffed in the back of the closet or wind up in a landfill. Why not swap them for something new and see if your piece could become someone else’s wardrobe staple? \nAt this community clothing swap\, you’ll learn Stylebook’s tips and tricks for maximizing your wardrobe and finding your unique style. \nHOW TO PARTICIPATE: \nIt’s a one-for-one swap: for each piece of clothing you bring\, you can take one home! All pieces are first-come\, first-served. \nPlease drop off clothing and accessories between 11-11:45am.The swapping will begin at 12pm. The swap is first-come\, first-served: the earlier you arrive\, the more there will be to choose from! \nWhen you arrive\, you will check-in your items receive one ticket per item to swap. For example\, if you bring three articles of clothing\, you’ll receive three tickets to trade for three “new-to-you” items. You can bring up to 10 items! Please bring them on a hanger if possible. \nTHE DOs: \n– Quality over quantity. You can bring up to 10 pieces\, but there is no minimum. Bring items you’d be excited to find! \n– Consider bringing your own reusable shopping bag to take your items home. Thanks for embracing the sustainability at the heart of clothing swaps. \nTHE DON’Ts: \n– Damaged garments. Kindly check your pieces for rips\, stains\, or missing pieces. \n– Please stick to versatile and non-personalized pieces. For example\, please avoid bringing t-shirts with your high school mascot or family reunion sweatshirts. \nThis event is held in partnership with the Stylebook closet organization app. \nIn the event that any unclaimed items remain at the end of the event\, participants will have the opportunity to ensure all ‘unswapped’ clothes go onto their next life through donation. Additional details to come. \n \n TICKETS HERE\n \n \nABOUT THE STYLEBOOK APP \nJess and Bill Atkins are the co-founders of Stylebook closet app\, the original outfit planner and closet organization app. Based in Princeton NJ\, the app has over 1 million users and is the best way to find your personal style. Stylebook is designed to help you carefully curate your wardrobe so you can love what you wear every day.
\nTheme – “The Police Medley”• “Message in a Bottle”• “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”• “Roxanne” \nA screen-free singing experience:\nPop-Up Choir Princeton is intentionally phone-free and screen-free. Instead of staring at iPads or projectors\, everyone receives a simple lyric sheet and learns the music together by ear and by voice — the way humans have always sung. This keeps the focus on listening\, connection\, and the shared energy of singing in the same room. \n \n Free rsvp
