DESCRIPTION:Princeton Comic Makers presents: JERSEY ART MEETUPS (JAM)\, a weekly social event connecting creatives within the greater Central Jersey area through a shared passion for sequential art and new media.  Attendees may use this open workshop space to draw\, write\, and develop their own artwork\, with an opportunity to receive peer review and feedback from other members if desired. Illustrators\, animators\, writers\, and generalists are all welcome to join and discuss their art and career goals\, share learning resources\, promote current projects\, or find friends and collaborators. Together\, we aspire to cultivate a local community that keeps artists motivated towards achieving their dreams! \n\nOpen to ages 16+ of any skill level interested in any form of narrative art and design (i.e. Animation\, Concept Art\, Comics\, Game Design\, Picture Books\, etc.)\nGroup meets weekly on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Casual attendance is accepted!\nBringing own materials is highly encouraged. Some basic materials are provided – paper\, pencils\, etc. – but please bring any tools necessary to help you create (i.e. drawing tablets\, sketchbooks\, etc.)\n\nWho we are: Sponsored by artist and educator Ronah Harris\, Princeton Comic Makers is an artist collective founded in 2023 by local illustrators Christina Castro\, Suyang Gong\, and Masha Zhdanova after noticing a lack of in-person community spaces for NJ-based artists specializing in narrative arts and communications design. Although we create independently\, we often exhibit together at events such as MoCCA Fest\, Anime NYC\, and Camden Comic Con. Our weekly study group motivated us to strive towards completing projects and working towards professional goals\, so we hope more people can benefit from this club! \nChristina Castro is a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist who graduated from Pratt Institute (2018) with a BFA in Digital Arts (2D Animation) and a minor in Creative Writing. Past clients include Smashbits Animation\, gal-dem zine\, and Bad Robot. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.

Ponder\nOn View: Saturday\, August 29 – Saturday\, October 3\, 2026Opening reception: wednesday\, September 9 from 5-7pm\npanel discussion: thursday\, September 17 from 5:30-6:30pm at princeton university art museum. learn more.\n \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION:Echoes in Our Bones will explore how themes of identity\, history\, and cultural resilience have endured and transformed across generations. The exhibition examines how these artists have explored and expanded the ideals articulated in the Declaration of Independence\, “Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness”\, using art as a powerful vehicle for expression\, resistance\, care\, and community. Pairings of artists from past and present generations will include Faith Ringgold and Bisa Butler\, Selma Burke and Allison Saar\, Mary Lovelace O’Neal and Julie Mehretu\, Betye Saar and Tschabalala Self\, Carrie Mae Weems and LaToya Ruby Frazier\, Laura Wheeler Waring and Jordan Casteel\, Elizabeth Catlett and Kara Walker\, and Howardena Pindell and Shinique Smith. Through these connections\, the exhibition will not only showcase individual artistic voices but also trace a lineage of creative expression that has contributed to shaping and defining American art. \n\n The Pairings: \nFaith Ringgold and Bisa Butler create large-scale works celebrating African American life through a combination of fabric and paint—a medium pioneered by Ringgold and Miriam Schapiro during the early years of the Feminist Art Movement in the 1970s: \n  \n\nElizabeth Catlett and Kara Walker both explore the heritage of slavery through printmaking\, a medium traditionally associated with social justice and political commentary: \n  \n\nLaura Wheeler Waring and Jordan Casteel: Waring devoted much of her career to portraying the emerging African American middle class\, while Casteel depicts the everyday lives of a broad spectrum of African Americans\, confidently occupying a wide variety of roles in the 21st century. It is worth noting that this early painting\, created shortly after Waring graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and likely executed while she was still in Paris on the prestigious travel fellowship awarded by PAFA to an outstanding graduate\, depicts two white women. This suggests that Waring had not yet chosen to focus her artistic practice on Black subjects: \n  \n\nBetye Saar and Tschabalala Self\, artists from two different generations\, both use collage\, distortion\, and caricature to explore themes of social justice and the African American experience of injustice: \n  \n\nHowardena Pindell and Shinique Smith both use discarded\, nontraditional materials to create works of art\, drawing an analogy to the experiences of people who are often overlooked or cast aside\, yet possess immense value: \n  \n\nMore pairings to come. \n\nAbout the curators:\nJudith K. BrodskyActivist\, artist\, curator\, writer Judith K. Brodsky is Distinguished Professor Emerita\, Department of Art and Design\, Rutgers University. She is a works-on-paper artist with prints and drawings in many museum collections worldwide and the founder of the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper\, now the Brodsky Center at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The Brodsky Center\, established in 1986\, is known for its activist pioneer mission to further opportunities for women-identified\, BIPOC\, and non-binary artists. An exhibition documenting the years it was at Rutgers was on view at the Zimmerli Art Museum\, Fall 2023. She was also co-founder of The Douglass Center for Women in the Arts and Humanities at Rutgers University in 2006. As a curator or co-curator\, she has organized many exhibitions including The Fertile Crescent: Gender\, Art\, and Society (2012) and the Philadelphia city-wide print festival\, Philagrafika (2010)\, three decades of exhibitions for the Rutgers Women Artists; Restoring the Art and Lives of a Circle of Five Forgotten Black Artists (2022); and (re)FOCUS: Philadelphia Focuses on Women in the Visual Arts\, 1974-2024 (2024). She is past national president of ArtTable\, College Art Association\, Women’s Caucus for Art\, former board chair\, New York Foundation for the Arts\, current board member\, Print Center New York\, and a former dean and associate provost at Rutgers. Brodsky writes on women artists and printmaking. Her most recent book is Dismantling the Patriarchy Bit by Bit: Art\, Feminism and Digital Technology (Bloomsbury 2022). A book on the history of the United States Feminist Art Movement focusing on the activist art historians and curators rather than the artists is due out in early 2027 (Bloomsbury Academic). \nRhinold L. PonderRhinold Lamar Ponder\, the Executive Director of Art Against Racism\, is an artist\, curator\, author\, activist and lawyer.  He is the founder and Executive Director of Art Against Racism\, a 501(c)(3)\, based in Princeton\, New Jersey. AAR’s mission is to leverage the arts to promote the creation of an anti-racist\, just and equitable society.An independent curator\, Rhinold has worked on several exhibitions and projects including those with Judith K. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.

Together\, we aspire to cultivate a local community that keeps artists motivated towards achieving their dreams! \n\nOpen to ages 16+ of any skill level interested in any form of narrative art and design (i.e. Animation\, Concept Art\, Comics\, Game Design\, Picture Books\, etc.)\nGroup meets weekly on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Casual attendance is accepted!\nBringing own materials is highly encouraged. Although we create independently\, we often exhibit together at events such as MoCCA Fest\, Anime NYC\, and Camden Comic Con. Our weekly study group motivated us to strive towards completing projects and working towards professional goals\, so we hope more people can benefit from this club! \nChristina Castro is a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist who graduated from Pratt Institute (2018) with a BFA in Digital Arts (2D Animation) and a minor in Creative Writing. Past clients include Smashbits Animation\, gal-dem zine\, and Bad Robot. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.

This month’s theme is “From Dusk Till Dawn“\nArrive by 6:45pm to add your name to the hat. No previous experience or pre-registration necessary.\n\nJoin our audience: \n\nTake the elevator or stairs to the Solley Theater\, located on the top floor of our Paul Robeson Center for the Arts.\nOptional: participate from your seat with a Micro Story. Read the printed prompt based on the evening’s theme and respond with a super concise story (just a line or two!) that answers the question. Shoot us an email. \n \nAbout our host:  \nBrass Rabbit is an artist\, contemporary curator\, and arts administrator based in Trenton\, New Jersey. Rabbit has been creating and hosting poetry\, spoken word\, and storytelling events in the tri-state area for over a decade. As a performer\, the art of storytelling holds a very special place in her heart\, but listening to and supporting others is where she feels most at home. \nHosting the Story & Verse Open Mic at the Arts Council of Princeton could be called a dream job\, but for Rabbit\, the position completely lacks any “work-like” qualities and is more of an outstanding experience she looks forward to each month. Previously\, Rabbit has hosted the Levitt Amp Music Series\, Voice to Ear Festival\, Word on Front Poetry Festival\, independent poetry and storytelling open mics\, and even curated an art exhibition celebrating the art of poetry.

Bring garments that no longer serve you\, and the fashion fates will guide you to new-to-you pieces destined to be yours. \nWe all have a piece of nice clothing that just didn’t work out for whatever reason. It might not fit your size\, your life\, or maybe your style has just evolved. Whatever the reason\, special clothes don’t have to be stuffed in the back of the closet or wind up in a landfill. Why not swap them for something new and see if your piece could become someone else’s wardrobe staple? \nAt this community clothing swap\, you’ll learn Stylebook’s tips and tricks for maximizing your wardrobe and finding your unique style. \nHOW TO PARTICIPATE: \nIt’s a one-for-one swap: for each piece of clothing you bring\, you can take one home! All pieces are first-come\, first-served. \nPlease drop off clothing and accessories between 11-11:45am.The swapping will begin at 12pm. The swap is first-come\, first-served: the earlier you arrive\, the more there will be to choose from! \nWhen you arrive\, you will check-in your items receive one ticket per item to swap. For example\, if you bring three articles of clothing\, you’ll receive three tickets to trade for three “new-to-you” items. You can bring up to 10 items! Please bring them on a hanger if possible. \nTHE DOs: \n– Quality over quantity. You can bring up to 10 pieces\, but there is no minimum. Bring items you’d be excited to find! \n– Consider bringing your own reusable shopping bag to take your items home. Together\, we aspire to cultivate a local community that keeps artists motivated towards achieving their dreams! \n\nOpen to ages 16+ of any skill level interested in any form of narrative art and design (i.e. Animation\, Concept Art\, Comics\, Game Design\, Picture Books\, etc.)\nGroup meets weekly on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Casual attendance is accepted!\nBringing own materials is highly encouraged. Some basic materials are provided – paper\, pencils\, etc. – but please bring any tools necessary to help you create (i.e. drawing tablets\, sketchbooks\, etc.)\n\nWho we are: Sponsored by artist and educator Ronah Harris\, Princeton Comic Makers is an artist collective founded in 2023 by local illustrators Christina Castro\, Suyang Gong\, and Masha Zhdanova after noticing a lack of in-person community spaces for NJ-based artists specializing in narrative arts and communications design. Although we create independently\, we often exhibit together at events such as MoCCA Fest\, Anime NYC\, and Camden Comic Con. Our weekly study group motivated us to strive towards completing projects and working towards professional goals\, so we hope more people can benefit from this club! \nChristina Castro is a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist who graduated from Pratt Institute (2018) with a BFA in Digital Arts (2D Animation) and a minor in Creative Writing. Past clients include Smashbits Animation\, gal-dem zine\, and Bad Robot. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.
