DESCRIPTION:The Traveling Waffle House Interviews\nBy artist Sheryl Bassman\nOn view: Mar 21 – Apr 18\nOpening: Sat\, Mar 21 | 3-5pm\nExhibition Statement:\nI have had an obsession with the Waffle House and its ageless presence for as long as I can\nremember. I spent the majority of my life waitressing and traveling around the country and have\nhad the greatest experiences meeting people from all different walks of life. I’ve learned that one\nwears many hats as a waitress working with the public. You are a therapist listening to\nstrangers’ problems; a salesperson selling items on the menu; a mediator between the customer\nand cooks when the food comes out wrong; a housekeeper keeping the restaurant clean and\nsanitized; a cashier responsible for bills and payments. All of this must be done with a smile on\nyour face. Despite all this\, serving is commonly looked down upon as a mediocre job and not a\ncareer – something one does when they cannot find any other work.\nThrough words and portraits\, I give recognition to each waitress/waiter. Each portrait is\nillustrated in ballpoint pen that waitress/ers use\, and completed on bold yet simple black and\nyellow Waffle House colors and is accompanied by a short story of what they shared about\nthemselves to me.
