Named for the Akan concept Sankofa\, meaning “go back and get it\,” the guild honors ancestral wisdom while shaping contemporary artistic expression. \nAs members of the Modern Quilt Guild\, PSSMQG promotes the growth of modern quilting through art\, education\, and community engagement. Guided by the motto\, “Each one\, teach one\,” members create modern quilts that blend African textiles\, innovative design\, and storytelling. \nThe guild is made up of quilters spanning six generations\, with the oldest member being a nonagenarian. This intergenerational community brings together a rich range of life experiences and professional backgrounds\, including academicians\, accountants\, authors\, attorneys\, clergy\, computer scientists\, craft artists\, educators\, engineers\, managing executives\, nurses\, poets\, a professional singer & pianist\, social workers\, and visual artists. These diverse perspectives enrich the guild’s creative practice and strengthen its sense of community. \nPhilanthropy and community service are also central to the guild’s mission. DESCRIPTION:Alas y Raíces: Princeton Young AchieversCurated by instructor Veronica Olivares-Weber\nOn View: July 11 – 31\, 2026Opening Reception: Saturday\, July 11\, 3-5pm \nLike the monarch butterfly\, each of us carries a story of where we come from and where we are going. Its migration between Canada\, the United States\, and Mexico reflects lives shaped by memory\, family\, change\, and return. \nAlas y Raíces presents work by students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Princeton Public Schools through papier-mâché monarch butterflies and painted butterfly compositions on canvas. The sculpted works reference the monarch’s distinctive orange\, black\, and white pattern\, while the painted works extend into varied colors and forms\, shaped by imagination\, freedom\, and individual expression. \nAs students created these works\, they explored ideas of family\, belonging\, kindness\, unity\, freedom\, and hope. Their work reflects how personal experience informs understanding\, how difference strengthens community\, and how connection and care shape growth. \nThis exhibition is a part of a collaboration between the Arts Council of Princeton and the YMCA\, which together have provided free access to the arts for the Princeton Young Achiever’s after school Program for more than 20 years and lead by teaching artist Verónica Olivares-Weber. \nAbout Veronica Olivares-Weber: Teaching Artist\, Cultural Educator & Community Leader \nVeronica Olivares-Weber\, originally from Mexico\, is a teaching artist and community organizer whose work spans more than two decades at the intersection of art\, education\, and social justice. She studied art history and ceramics classes at Teachers College\, Columbia University\, where she developed a strong foundation in both theory and practice. Deeply connected to her heritage\, her practice is rooted in preserving Latin American art traditions\, storytelling\, and community empowerment through the arts. \nSince 2010\, Olivares-Weber has been a faculty member at the Arts Council of Princeton\, where she teaches visual arts and leads creative programming for the Princeton Young Achievers after-school initiative\, serving students from historically underserved neighborhoods. Her teaching emphasizes traditional and contemporary techniques across a wide range of media\, including ceramics\, sculpture\, papier-mâché\, mixed media\, and painting. Through culturally immersive classes like Spanish Through Art and The Movement of the Muralist\, she fosters creative expression while preserving and celebrating Mexican folk art traditions. \nHer workshops often focus on traditional forms such as sugar skull-making\, embossed tin (hojalata)\, papier-mâché\, and nichos. These hands-on sessions engage learners of all ages and backgrounds in exploring identity\, gratitude\, and cultural heritage through meaningful artistic practice. \nIn addition to her teaching\, Olivares-Weber has curated and co-organized numerous exhibitions and public events\, including over 15 years of Día de los Muertos programming at the Arts Council of Princeton. She is the founder and main organizer of the Festival Cultural Latino\, a celebrated annual event that highlights Latino culture and arts in the Princeton community. Her leadership has also shaped community altars\, installations\, and collaborative public art projects\, including the 2021 Dohm Alley installation. Veronica Olivares-Weber \nFor the past three years\, she served as Artist in Residence at Community Park School\, where she worked closely with students to integrate arts into their learning experience\, emphasizing cultural history and creative expression. \nShe works closely with Princeton University across departments such as theLewis Center for the Arts\, the Effron Center\, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese\, the Department of Art & Archaeology\, the Program for Community-Engaged Scholarship (ProCES)\, and the Pace Center for Civic Engagement. Through these collaborations\, she facilitates workshops\, student-led art projects\, lectures\, and events that bridge academic and local communities while deepening understanding of Latin American art and immigrant experiences. \nOlivares-Weber served as Chair of the Princeton Human Services Commission until 2024 and has served on the boards of the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund (LALDEF)\, Housing Initiatives of Princeton\, McCarter\, Code Equal\, and the Arts Council of Princeton. She currently serves on the Civil Rights Commission of Princeton. Her work reflects a sustained commitment to equity\, inclusion\, and the preservation of cultural traditions through education and the arts.

DESCRIPTION:The choir you didn’t know you needed.\n\nPop-Up Choir Princeton is an all-ages community singing experience where families\, neighbors\, and music-lovers come together to sing pop songs in harmony — no auditions\, no pressure\, just joy. \n\nKids and parents sing side-by-side\nAdults who “used to sing” feel safe to try again\nFirst-time singers get to experience the magic of choir\n\nSing shortened versions of well-loved pop songs arranged with easy-to-follow harmonies. \nRather than being divided by age or gender\, singers choose the range that feels best for their voice: Low\, Middle\, or High. \nFamilies sit together and work as a team — either choosing to all sing the same part or challenge each other to sing in harmony. \nThere will also be moments where singers can volunteer to sing a short line of the melody on their own. If you feel inspired\, just raise your hand when prompted and you can try the melody while the choir supports you. \n\nA screen-free singing experience:\n\nPop-Up Choir Princeton is intentionally phone-free and screen-free. Instead of staring at iPads or projectors\, everyone receives a simple lyric sheet and learns the music together by ear and by voice — the way humans have always sung. This month’s theme is “Turn Up the Heat“\nArrive by 6:45pm to add your name to the hat. No previous experience or pre-registration necessary.\n\nJoin our audience: \n\nTake the elevator or stairs to the Solley Theater\, located on the top floor of our Paul Robeson Center for the Arts.\nOptional: participate from your seat with a Micro Story. Read the printed prompt based on the evening’s theme and respond with a super concise story (just a line or two!) that answers the question. DESCRIPTION:Princeton Comic Makers presents: JERSEY ART MEETUPS (JAM)\, a weekly social event connecting creatives within the greater Central Jersey area through a shared passion for sequential art and new media.  Attendees may use this open workshop space to draw\, write\, and develop their own artwork\, with an opportunity to receive peer review and feedback from other members if desired. Illustrators\, animators\, writers\, and generalists are all welcome to join and discuss their art and career goals\, share learning resources\, promote current projects\, or find friends and collaborators. Together\, we aspire to cultivate a local community that keeps artists motivated towards achieving their dreams! \n\nOpen to ages 16+ of any skill level interested in any form of narrative art and design (i.e. Animation\, Concept Art\, Comics\, Game Design\, Picture Books\, etc.)\nGroup meets weekly on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Casual attendance is accepted!\nBringing own materials is highly encouraged. Some basic materials are provided – paper\, pencils\, etc. – but please bring any tools necessary to help you create (i.e. drawing tablets\, sketchbooks\, etc.)\n\nWho we are: Sponsored by artist and educator Ronah Harris\, Princeton Comic Makers is an artist collective founded in 2023 by local illustrators Christina Castro\, Suyang Gong\, and Masha Zhdanova after noticing a lack of in-person community spaces for NJ-based artists specializing in narrative arts and communications design. Although we create independently\, we often exhibit together at events such as MoCCA Fest\, Anime NYC\, and Camden Comic Con. Our weekly study group motivated us to strive towards completing projects and working towards professional goals\, so we hope more people can benefit from this club! \nChristina Castro is a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist who graduated from Pratt Institute (2018) with a BFA in Digital Arts (2D Animation) and a minor in Creative Writing. Past clients include Smashbits Animation\, gal-dem zine\, and Bad Robot. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.

DESCRIPTION:Use this open studio space to tackle a creative project! \nHave a stack of art supplies collecting dust? Looking to make your existing artistic process more social? \nIf you’re ready to tackle a craft and enjoy the company of other creative-minded folks\, join us in the Craft Corner for an evening of casual art-making. This is an open space to use freely – bring your watercolor set\, coloring book\, sewing machine\, polymer clay – and get to work! If you’re between projects\, you’re welcome to bring a book\, a puzzle to work on with the group\, or anything that will spark your creativity. \nAges 18+. This is a non-instructional gathering and attendees are responsible for bringing their own projects to work on. Please be mindful and avoid turpentine or other odorous materials. SUMMARY:Jersey Art Meetup (JAM)
DESCRIPTION:Princeton Comic Makers presents: JERSEY ART MEETUPS (JAM)\, a weekly social event connecting creatives within the greater Central Jersey area through a shared passion for sequential art and new media.  Attendees may use this open workshop space to draw\, write\, and develop their own artwork\, with an opportunity to receive peer review and feedback from other members if desired. Illustrators\, animators\, writers\, and generalists are all welcome to join and discuss their art and career goals\, share learning resources\, promote current projects\, or find friends and collaborators. Together\, we aspire to cultivate a local community that keeps artists motivated towards achieving their dreams! \n\nOpen to ages 16+ of any skill level interested in any form of narrative art and design (i.e. Animation\, Concept Art\, Comics\, Game Design\, Picture Books\, etc.)\nGroup meets weekly on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Casual attendance is accepted!\nBringing own materials is highly encouraged. Some basic materials are provided – paper\, pencils\, etc. – but please bring any tools necessary to help you create (i.e. drawing tablets\, sketchbooks\, etc.)\n\nWho we are: Sponsored by artist and educator Ronah Harris\, Princeton Comic Makers is an artist collective founded in 2023 by local illustrators Christina Castro\, Suyang Gong\, and Masha Zhdanova after noticing a lack of in-person community spaces for NJ-based artists specializing in narrative arts and communications design. Although we create independently\, we often exhibit together at events such as MoCCA Fest\, Anime NYC\, and Camden Comic Con. Our weekly study group motivated us to strive towards completing projects and working towards professional goals\, so we hope more people can benefit from this club! \nChristina Castro is a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist who graduated from Pratt Institute (2018) with a BFA in Digital Arts (2D Animation) and a minor in Creative Writing. Past clients include Smashbits Animation\, gal-dem zine\, and Bad Robot. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.
