DESCRIPTION:Princeton Comic Makers presents: JERSEY ART MEETUPS (JAM)\, a weekly social event connecting creatives within the greater Central Jersey area through a shared passion for sequential art and new media.  Attendees may use this open workshop space to draw\, write\, and develop their own artwork\, with an opportunity to receive peer review and feedback from other members if desired. Illustrators\, animators\, writers\, and generalists are all welcome to join and discuss their art and career goals\, share learning resources\, promote current projects\, or find friends and collaborators. Together\, we aspire to cultivate a local community that keeps artists motivated towards achieving their dreams! \n\nOpen to ages 16+ of any skill level interested in any form of narrative art and design (i.e. Animation\, Concept Art\, Comics\, Game Design\, Picture Books\, etc.)\nGroup meets weekly on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Casual attendance is accepted!\nBringing own materials is highly encouraged. Some basic materials are provided – paper\, pencils\, etc. – but please bring any tools necessary to help you create (i.e. drawing tablets\, sketchbooks\, etc.)\n\nWho we are: Sponsored by artist and educator Ronah Harris\, Princeton Comic Makers is an artist collective founded in 2023 by local illustrators Christina Castro\, Suyang Gong\, and Masha Zhdanova after noticing a lack of in-person community spaces for NJ-based artists specializing in narrative arts and communications design. Although we create independently\, we often exhibit together at events such as MoCCA Fest\, Anime NYC\, and Camden Comic Con. Our weekly study group motivated us to strive towards completing projects and working towards professional goals\, so we hope more people can benefit from this club! \nChristina Castro is a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist who graduated from Pratt Institute (2018) with a BFA in Digital Arts (2D Animation) and a minor in Creative Writing. Past clients include Smashbits Animation\, gal-dem zine\, and Bad Robot. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.

SUMMARY:In Conversation | "Silks" by Laura Wheeler Waring
DESCRIPTION:Come listen to an intriguing art detective story.\n\nIncluded in the exhibition at the ACP in celebration of the semiquincentennial is a painting by Laura Wheeler Waring\, an African American artist whose portraits of Black Americans are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum\, that has been hidden in an attic for 110 years.\nIt was given by Waring to the mother of Dr. Lynn Starr who recently found it when she went through her deceased mother’s belongings. Judith K. Brodsky and Rhinold Ponder\, the curators of the exhibition very much wanted to include a painting by Waring.  Most of her work is on permanent display in major museums\, and for many months\, despite their queries\, they could not find one for the exhibition. But they persisted and continued their research hoping to find a loanable piece.  They eventually found a blog by art historian Valerie Harris about a lost painting by Waring. Harris had located it in Philadelphia\, and thanks to Harris\, Ponder and Brodsky were able to contact Dr. Starr who agreed to loan the painting but said it needed restoration. At that point\, they brought it to the Conservation Center in Philadelphia. Once they saw the painting\, they realized that it was one of only a few paintings from her early period\, last on public view in 1916. On October 1\, Dr. Starr\, scholar Valerie Harris\, and a conservator from the Conservation Center will hold a conversation moderated by Brodsky and Ponder in the Taplin Gallery where the painting will be on view. The audience will see the actual painting whose story of discovery is being told. Harris will talk about Waring’s place in American art history\, Starr will explain how her mother came to know Waring and own the painting\, and the conservator will talk about how good conservation and restoration takes place. \nThe Arts Council of Princeton is thrilled to be the first to show this painting in over 100 years!\n\nAbout Laura Wheeler Waring:\nLaura Wheeler Waring was born in Philadelphia and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Upon graduation\, she was awarded the school’s top prize for excellence — the Cresson Traveling Fellowship. She arrived in Paris in 1914\, just in time for World War I\, a circumstance which cut short her visit. She returned to the United States in 1915. Waring did have another opportunity to travel to Paris in the 1920s. Her second visit shaped her mature work — vigorously oil painted portraits of the rising Black middle class in the United States. The painting in the exhibition\, titled Silks is one of only a few surviving from her early period. It is not clear whether the painting was initiated in Paris and finished in the United States\, or completed in one or the other. Portraying two white women examining silk fabrics in a shop\, it was exhibited in 1916 and has not been seen since\, until this exhibition. It is an image of the past\, full of Art Deco swirls and pastel colors. The women are white\, but the painting forecasts Wheeler’s later work in which she concentrates on portraying Black individuals as successful members of American society. Waring became well-known through the commission she received from the Harmon Foundation to execute a series of portraits of well-known African American figures like W.E.B. Du Bois and Marian Anderson. According to an interview with her widower husband\, Waring complained about the fact that the only images of Blacks in painting and sculpture were menial workers. She wanted to show that instead\, they were successful like white Americans. \nAbout Dr. H. Lynn Starr\, M.D.\, F.A.A.P.:\nA pediatrician with specialization in behavioral & developmental pediatrics\, H. Lynn Starr\, M.D. has professional experience across consultation\, clinical practice and faculty roles in pediatric primary care and child behavior and development. Prior to her retirement\, Dr. Starr served as the Group Medical Director\, Schizophrenia Area Lead for Janssen Neuroscience US Medical Affairs\, holding overall medical leadership for schizophrenia and related areas. In this role\, she aligned evidence generation with advances in patient care in the evolving health care landscape and supported Janssen’s continued engagement with psychiatry\, health policy\, advocacy\, and health care quality decision-makers. In her 21 years with Johnson & Johnson\, Dr. Starr developed innovative programs for Janssen to impact disease state knowledge and the adoption of accepted clinical practice in under-represented minorities\, and designed and implemented novel clinical trials in Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)\, schizophrenia\, and treatment-resistant depression. She is the author of numerous publications and the recipient of several Johnson & Johnson awards.\nDr. Starr has served as a member of several professional organizations\, and she is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She was appointed to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Consensus Conference on Conflicts of Interest and the American Psychiatric Association Corporate Advisory Council\, and has served on review committees for the Partnership for a Healthier America’s Catalyst for Change Awards and The Academic Pediatric Association’s New Century (NC) Scholars Program. Her volunteer work has included serving on the Children First Executive Board of Directors and leading mentorship programs for the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics and her Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc. chapter. \nAbout Valerie Harris:\nValerie Harris is a writer\, independent scholar\, and media creator. She is internationally recognized as an authority on the life and work of African American artist\, Laura Wheeler Waring (1887-1948). She is the author of the Laura Wheeler Waring blog\, where she shares biographical knowledge about the artist and emphasizes the importance of Black biography as a means of cultural preservation. Her often-cited article\, Life of A Portrait: Laura Wheeler Waring’s Anna Washington Derry (Pennsylvania Heritage\, Summer 2019) which details the parallel lives of the artist and the sitter for Waring’s most-widely reproduced painting\, has been downloaded from Academia.edu by historians and scholars in 19 countries.\nHarris frequently presents on Waring\, including the visual lectures\, Laura Wheeler Waring: Her Best Face Forward\, for the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art; as well as on Waring’s work as an illustrator for the Delaware Art Museum\, and on Waring’s legacy at The Matronage Salon installation at Future Fair 2025 during New York Art Week. She successfully authenticated “Silks\,” a newly discovered Waring painting\, thanks to her extensive knowledge of the artist.\nRelated writings include The Art of Biography; The Problem With Biography\, and Verifying A Painting: Is This A Waring?\nHarris is a former Board member of the Historic Paul Robeson House and Museum in Philadelphia\, where she founded and led  “Teen Writers Academy\,” a model community-based writing workshop. A three-time Leeway Foundation grantee\, Valerie received the foundation’s Transformation Award for her film\, “A Highway Runs Through It: A Community History of Darby Township” which traces the history of African Americans in the area back to the late 18th century.\nA member of Biographers’ International\, Harris is currently at work on the first in-depth biography of Laura Wheeler Waring\, positioning Waring as a forerunner of the new renaissance in Black figurative art. \nThis piece is a part of our Echoes in Our Bones: The Empowering Legacy of Black Women Artists in American Art and Culture exhibition. About the show: Echoes in Our Bones will explore how themes of identity\, history\, and cultural resilience have endured and transformed across generations. The exhibition examines how these artists have explored and expanded the ideals articulated in the Declaration of Independence\, “Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness”\, using art as a powerful vehicle for expression\, resistance\, care\, and community. Benjamin Franklin devised a secret nature printing process when printing colonial currency in Philadelphia. Nature printing is a little-known technique today\, but it holds a fascinating and worldwide history. This practice served as art and craft\, and as a science for the study and identification of plants. Although it has been traced back thousands of years\, its origins have never been discovered. \nTwo Views: Lisa Madson and Laura Bethmann\nLisa lives and works in northern New Jersey. She translates the beauty of nature through a steam dyeing process where the natural pigments and patterns of plants project their images onto paper or canvas. Past clients include Smashbits Animation\, gal-dem zine\, and Bad Robot. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.

Bring garments that no longer serve you\, and the fashion fates will guide you to new-to-you pieces destined to be yours. \nWe all have a piece of nice clothing that just didn’t work out for whatever reason. It might not fit your size\, your life\, or maybe your style has just evolved. Whatever the reason\, special clothes don’t have to be stuffed in the back of the closet or wind up in a landfill. Why not swap them for something new and see if your piece could become someone else’s wardrobe staple? \nAt this community clothing swap\, you’ll learn Stylebook’s tips and tricks for maximizing your wardrobe and finding your unique style. \nHOW TO PARTICIPATE: \nIt’s a one-for-one swap: for each piece of clothing you bring\, you can take one home! All pieces are first-come\, first-served. \nPlease drop off clothing and accessories between 11-11:45am.The swapping will begin at 12pm. The swap is first-come\, first-served: the earlier you arrive\, the more there will be to choose from! \nWhen you arrive\, you will check-in your items receive one ticket per item to swap. For example\, if you bring three articles of clothing\, you’ll receive three tickets to trade for three “new-to-you” items. You can bring up to 10 items! Please bring them on a hanger if possible. \nTHE DOs: \n– Quality over quantity. You can bring up to 10 pieces\, but there is no minimum. DESCRIPTION:Princeton Comic Makers presents: JERSEY ART MEETUPS (JAM)\, a weekly social event connecting creatives within the greater Central Jersey area through a shared passion for sequential art and new media.  Attendees may use this open workshop space to draw\, write\, and develop their own artwork\, with an opportunity to receive peer review and feedback from other members if desired. Illustrators\, animators\, writers\, and generalists are all welcome to join and discuss their art and career goals\, share learning resources\, promote current projects\, or find friends and collaborators. Together\, we aspire to cultivate a local community that keeps artists motivated towards achieving their dreams! \n\nOpen to ages 16+ of any skill level interested in any form of narrative art and design (i.e. Animation\, Concept Art\, Comics\, Game Design\, Picture Books\, etc.)\nGroup meets weekly on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Casual attendance is accepted!\nBringing own materials is highly encouraged. Some basic materials are provided – paper\, pencils\, etc. – but please bring any tools necessary to help you create (i.e. drawing tablets\, sketchbooks\, etc.)\n\nWho we are: Sponsored by artist and educator Ronah Harris\, Princeton Comic Makers is an artist collective founded in 2023 by local illustrators Christina Castro\, Suyang Gong\, and Masha Zhdanova after noticing a lack of in-person community spaces for NJ-based artists specializing in narrative arts and communications design. Although we create independently\, we often exhibit together at events such as MoCCA Fest\, Anime NYC\, and Camden Comic Con. Our weekly study group motivated us to strive towards completing projects and working towards professional goals\, so we hope more people can benefit from this club! \nChristina Castro is a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist who graduated from Pratt Institute (2018) with a BFA in Digital Arts (2D Animation) and a minor in Creative Writing. Past clients include Smashbits Animation\, gal-dem zine\, and Bad Robot. Christina also currently organizes and leads the production management of several indie charity zines\, collaborating with writers\, illustrators\, and musicians all around the world. Suyang Gong is a fine artist and illustrator who graduated from Rutgers (2021) with a BFA in Fine Arts. She has formerly worked as a teaching assistant at the Sharron Art Center for 3 years\, tutoring students in refining technical drawing skills. Suyang also specializes in traditional media\, often using materials like graphite\, ink\, and oil paint to create dynamic works. Masha Zhdanova is a freelance writer\, editor\, and illustrator who graduated from SCAD (2019) with a BFA in Sequential Art and recently completed her MFA in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies (2022). She was a teaching assistant for two Winter workshops at CCS and has taught comics classes for kids at the Princeton Public Library. Masha’s clients include Publisher’s Weekly\, Women Write About Comics\, and Polygon\, and she also currently edits content for The Anime Herald.

DESCRIPTION:The choir you didn’t know you needed.\n\nPop-Up Choir Princeton is an all-ages community singing experience where families\, neighbors\, and music-lovers come together to sing pop songs in harmony — no auditions\, no pressure\, just joy. \n\nKids and parents sing side-by-side\nAdults who “used to sing” feel safe to try again\nFirst-time singers get to experience the magic of choir\n\nSing shortened versions of well-loved pop songs arranged with easy-to-follow harmonies. \nRather than being divided by age or gender\, singers choose the range that feels best for their voice: Low\, Middle\, or High. \nFamilies sit together and work as a team — either choosing to all sing the same part or challenge each other to sing in harmony. \nThere will also be moments where singers can volunteer to sing a short line of the melody on their own. If you feel inspired\, just raise your hand when prompted and you can try the melody while the choir supports you. \nTheme – “The Wizard of Oz Medley”\n• “Ding-Dong!
