Alla Prima Painting: W/S (May)

These 3-day workshops focus on mastering three aspects of technique in oil painting: the palette, the canvas, and the set-up. More specifically, these workshops will cover palette organization, control of color in tonal painting, alla prima painting technique, use of mediums, various grounds, how to set-up a still life, composition, and learning to see in abstract terms. Each day will consist of a 1-hour lecture and demonstration, followed by painting time with one-on-one instruction.
Class size is limited to 8 students.
Bring a snack and beverage to enjoy during breaks.
Meets Fri 5/2 2-6pm; Sat 5/3 2-6pm; and Sun 5/4 10am-2pm.

Paint Out: Morven

Art al Fresco!
Join us for the Arts Council’s continuing Paint Out Princeton program at Morven, whose beautiful grounds become your studio for a day of painting en plein air. Discover the endless possibilities in capturing the spirit and essence of this historic site. The mansion, former residence of New Jersey’s Governors and 18th Century home of Richard Stockton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, has an impressive façade and wonderful architectural details. The Courtyard offers views of the mansion, surrounding outer buildings, and the glorious Colonial Revival Garden shaded by soaring spruce trees. The Grand Front Lawn is dotted with majestic trees and beds of heirloom plants. Come explore the changing effects of natural light as it bathes the grounds throughout the day. The public enjoying Morven in May will be invited to visit and observe artists at work!
Pre-registration is requested. Registration is exclusively through the Arts Council of Princeton.

Interested participants are invited to exhibit their artwork at the Arts Council of Princeton for the period between May 4 and May 10. Please bear in mind the following guidelines for works to be exhibited:
All registered participants must arrive at Morven between 10-10:30am to have their canvas stamped, and sign a participation agreement.
Artists who would like to exhibit their work at the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts must bring their work ready to hang to the Robeson Center by 4:30pm on Sunday, May 4, 2014. If you choose to exhibit your work, please be advised that the maximum outer dimensions are 16″ x 20″ (including frame; frame not required). The Arts Council of Princeton will host an exhibition through May 10, 2014 of Paint Out Princeton artworks (including those created April 27 during Communiversity) alongside artworks from the Morven Paint Out Princeton. A closing reception will be held on Saturday, May 10 from 3-5pm. The ACP will take a standard 30% commission on the sale price of all artwork sold at the Robeson Center for the Arts, the proceeds of which support the exhibition program. (Artworks do not have to be for sale.)

All artwork must be removed by the artist or buyer by 5:00pm on May 10, 2014. Any artwork remaining after this time becomes the property of the Arts Council of Princeton.

Felted Flowers

Make this year’s celebration truly special by creating a Mother’s Day bouquet of beautiful and colorful felted flowers. These unique gifts will never wilt and will be treasured for years to come! Using only dyed carded wool, soap and water, participants will discover the endless possibilities of this fun process! No previous felting experience is necessary. Please bring an old towel and a bar of soap to class. Materials will be supplied by instructor for an additional $15.

Nature Photo: Watershed

This workshop will lead participants in a journey of observing and photographing nature as she transforms into springtime splendor. Discover firsthand the emergence of spring from the awakening of insects and other small creatures to the unfolding of foliage and flowers. Explore the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Reserve in Pennington with one of the Naturalists, accompanied by Clem Fiori, renowned photographer and environmentalist based in Somerset County. Participants will receive individualized attention and photography instruction throughout the afternoon. Learn some new techniques in making expressive landscape images, both close-up and of a wider view. Topics will include lighting, lenses, focusing and exposure techniques, pre-visualization process, composition, and presentation of final images. Participants will need cameras (35mm or digital SLR). It would be useful to have a macro lens or micro attachment. Tripods are also helpful, but not necessary.
This workshop meets at the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed: 31 Titus Mill Road in Pennington.
