Avian Art: Watershed

- $30

Join local artist and ACP instructor and bird enthusiast Susan Hoenig and learn about residential and migratory birds found in New Jersey. Susan is also an avid bird enthusiast! Students will use them as inspiration for their very own fantastic feathered 3D creations using mixed media (including paint and collaged materials). These sculptures will soar around the studio with out-stretched wings, as though in flight, but tethered to a colorful support. Students will gain a new appreciation of our feathered friends for the beauty of these avian creatures is a sight to behold. Birds reach out to us in so many ways. The life of birds is indicative of the health of our habitat, our forests, and salt marshes. Discover the wonder in your own creation.

This workshop is part of ACP’s Saturday Sampler for kids at the Watershed. Register for one, two, or all three (for the most fun!). Art classes meet in the Watershed Center of Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association. Landscape Poetry: GFS

-

Celebrate Earth Day in poetry!
Visitors to GFS are invited to create poems inspired by Mother Nature and the beautiful landscape surrounding them The adventure begins with a brief demo by poet Colby Cedar Smith as she creates a poem and talks about the process through which she goes. Then, families can work together to create their own poems. As you tour the grounds, you will happen upon prompt words that you can choose to incorporate or interpret in your own creation. These will be hung from tree limbs and other supports – creating their own inspirational “landscape”. Participants will quite literally be walking through words. Watercolor pencils will be provided for participants to illustrate the borders of their poems. Completed poems are then added to a clothespin display in the park for visitors to enjoy. Drop-in any time between 1 and 3pm. Free with park admission.
