Gallery Opening: The Art Makers

February 10 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Photography by Elizabeth Massa

When I started teaching at ACP, I began photographing and documenting my students in class and camp. Over the last year, what began as a way to document class sessions and process what was happening in my studios, evolved into a new project and body of work that explores the creative energy of our youngest artists at work. It’s is an active and ongoing project.

These are images made in the moment. These are moments of exploration, curiosity, discovery, and play.

There are quiet moments in the organized chaos of the studios. There are moments of process and flow. There are moments of connection and ideas taking shape.

Elizabeth Massa is an interdisciplinary artist and documentary photographer based in Lawrenceville, NJ. She is a storyteller and teaching artist. She makes work about food and food culture, both near and far. Utilizing concentrations in photography, painting, illustration, Suminagashi, printmaking, and book arts, her work is a celebration of the everyday, of daily ritual, of the land and the water. Elizabeth holds a BA in American Studies from Smith College and a Graduate Certificate in Documentary Photography and Ethics from the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. She studied at the Herron School of Art and Design, Sculoa Internazionale di Grafica, Venezia, as well The Institute of Culinary Education. (That’s right! Elizabeth is also a trained pastry chef.) She studied with Karen Baldner, Shelby Lee Adams and Penny De Los Santos. She got her start in the field working for Thatcher Cook and Corbin Gurkin. She is the owner of the pop up and soon to be online shop, The House That Liz Built.
