From ancient scrolls on papyrus to the development of the codex and European Medieval Manuscripts on parchment, join Lillian Ciuffreda who will explain the multi-step process of making a book by hand from antiquity to the advent of the printing press.
Discover how the most important ancient works lead to the creation of the beautiful Medieval Illuminated Manuscripts we admire so much today. Learn about who created them, where they were made, the illumination process and materials used, who they were made for, how a book was assembled, and the impact of the printing press on manuscript production. Illustrations will be used throughout the session to clarify each area.
Lillian Ciuffreda, former educator and school administrator, began collecting manuscripts shortly after taking a class at the Cloisters many years ago. From her collection, two double page manuscripts from the 1500s will be displayed and made available for participants to hold and photograph.
