Tell us about yourself and your art!
I have always had a need to express myself. The performing arts was my starting point, attending acting school in NYC in my 20s. I enjoyed the experience at the time but felt a deeper longing for the visual arts. I grew up watching my mother studying art, going to her evening painting and sculpture classes. She and her art friends opened a collective art gallery in Montreal in the 70s. I was a teenager at the time. I would go to the art gallery after my days in high school, waiting for my ride home with her. The gallery had a studio in the back and she and her friend would paint and chat about life and art. It felt a lot more like a window into a rich world of beauty, expression and freedom than just waiting for a ride home. Looking back now, I can see how formative those days were for me. The seeds planted in that gallery’s back room were to germinate decades later.
The call of a career as a healer absorbed the last 3 decades of my life. My work as a psychotherapist has helped me to deepen my understanding of how important the connection between well being and creativity is. It is what moved me to reconnect with painting by starting to take classes after moving to Princeton years ago. The Arts Council of Princeton was the place where I started reconnecting with the artist that had been patiently waiting for me to tune into her again. She had been tugging at my shirt since the days of high school and I finally was ready to listen to her.
What inspires your work? Do you have any favorite artists?
I am inspired by beauty and emotions. Nature is where the two connect for me. It is where I go to find a sense of peace and ease which on a good day I am able to bring to the studio and unto the canvas. I gravitated towards abstract painting due to its intuitive nature. I love and admire the work of many artist, old masters and contemporary. Some of the ones that resonate with me more deeply and inspire my work are Cy Twombly and Helen Frankenthaler.
